Reintegration flats in action

An update on what our reintegration flats are, and how they're going.

As part of the Navigate Initiative, we offer residential housing to Tū Ora upon release from prison. These ‘reintegration flats’ address a fundamental barrier that many face upon release. Finding accommodation with limited financial resources, no rental history, and a criminal record can seem insurmountable.

Group Administrator and Property Coordinator Ange explains that having a place to go upon release can be a huge help in the early phases of reintegration. "Our residential housing is simply a stepping stone, but one with significant impact where basic needs are met, such as having a roof over your head, a warm bed at night and an environment to focus and prepare for a fresh start."

The impact becomes clear when you see how this stable foundation enables transformation. Ange shares a recent example of a Tū Ora who was determined to secure his own permanent housing through a property management company rather than waiting on the social housing register.

"Each day, our Tū Ora engaged with numerous house viewings, applications, and rejections. Some days were harder than others, especially when they'd receive two or three rejections in one day," she explains. "However, they persisted, and within a short time frame, their application for permanent housing was eventually accepted."

The significance of this achievement extends beyond simply securing accommodation. As Ange emphasises:

This is a significant step in their journey of establishing a fresh start and highlights that, with the right attitude, support and commitment, anything is possible regardless of one's past.
