Pathway Affordable Housing

From survival mode to stability.

Property Coordinator Ange updates us on the social housing landscape.

The housing crisis continues to be a pressing reality for many in our communities. Pathway’s Property Coordinator, Ange, shares her perspective from the frontlines of Pathway Affordable Housing (PAH).

“There are still a large number of people on the Social Housing Register waiting for a permanent home,” she explains. “Avoiding homelessness often means considering options such as emergency or transitional housing in the interim. In April 2025, there were 453 households in Emergency Housing in Christchurch, highlighting the grim reality of challenges people are facing today.”

For those stuck in a cycle of short-term accommodation, life becomes an exhausting challenge.

“People are often living transiently, constantly moving, with no certainty or stability. It takes a toll — mentally, emotionally, and practically. When someone finally secures a Pathway home, they’re often coming out of survival mode.”

That’s where PAH steps in — not just as a housing provider, but as a bridge to something more stable, more hopeful.

“Our homes are warm, dry, and affordable — but we also go beyond the basics. We help minimise the number of people stuck in emergency housing, and we work alongside our tenants to build wellbeing and connection.”

Ange says the goal is always about more than just housing:

“What we do goes beyond just providing a roof. It’s about building trust, strengthening community, and walking alongside people as they find their footing again.”
