Young prisoners strike a chord with CSO

“When performing with someone you are expressing yo ur own musical voice in co-operation. It’s a journey and a challenge that involves discovering music and working towards a common goal.”

Cathy Irons, CSO community Engagement Project

At the end of March this year Pathway teamed up with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) to offer a week-long music programme in Christchurch Men’s Prison Youth Unit.

The week began with a demonstration from the CSO to the young men in the unit. From there, men were able to volunteer for an intensive music workshop which would culminate with a concert the following Friday. Over the course of a week the men spent several hours each day learning four contemporary percussion and instrumental pieces, involving reading music, composition and learning new musical instruments. The workshop had a special focus on teamwork and creative expression.

“I wanted to do this to get out of my cell and because it is good to learn new things” commented one participant during the course. “I have been to prison before and I decided on this sentence I would try new things because I want to make changes in my life. I am finding it really hard because I don’t have a background in music, but I’m determined to stick it out for the full week and make the graduation. I want the certificate so that I can show my mum I am making changes.”

Cathy Irons, the CSO Community Engagement Project Leader described the project as “invaluable.” “Pathway and the CSO had a common vision of using the arts as a voice or medium for expression,” says Cathy. “When performing with someone you are expressing your own musical voice in co-operation. It’s a journey and a challenge that involves discovering music and working towards a common goal.“

According to Carey Ewing, the concert was a phenomenal success. This is yet another example of the community and Corrections successfully working in partnership to offer a new way forward for young men looking for a fresh start.
